Mark the present position of distributor for reference. Assuming timing has (somehow) prevented engine from running as some have suggested, you could try advancing timing in small increments at a time to get it to run - say 1 mm at a time.

dumb question but could my alternator have died on me and I am running on the battery only? Not enough juice to the coil and on down the line?

No. Not at all. You're struggling to find solutions that are easier to service, but all the usual suspects have been outlined in this thread already.

You can easily check with a multimeter if you want to prove out your charging system anyway.

Finally seeing some daylight. I could not get the engine to idle for more than a minute before it would load up and abruptly die. It would also spit fuel out of the vents like a fountain. Also the clear fuel filter would empty into the carb causing a hard start with clouds of black smoke out of the tail pipe.
Couldn't keep it running long enough or smooth enough to adjust anything on it. Finally while it was off I seated the fuel mixture screws in and backed them out 1 1/2 turns out and went to do the same to the idle screw. Untouched by me the screw was all the way open. I turned it all the way in at least 5 full turns and backed it out 1 turn. After cranking a bit it started and ran very smooth.
I finally got to adust it with a vacuum gauge which got me 21" and ran smoothly. However, after about 5 minutes of idle it kinda bogged for about half a second and then abruptly went back to smooth idle. Not sure what this is but I am happy I can at least hear it run. Any suggestions as to what the short bog is caused from. It does this about every 5 minutes. Thanks to all for your previous answers and any suggestions.

The needle in one of your bowls may not be seating. Thus the fountain of fuel.
I would take both bowls off and take a slow look.
Use the Holley website address I gave you to familiarize yourself.
Good job you are making progress. Try a turn and a half from bottomed out on your idle screws.
Keep at it.
