Straight 6 fuel economy

Hey all, my buddies looking into purchasing a 1992 f150, two wheel drive, reg cab long box, with a 4.9l inline 6, with a manual 5 speed. This is his first truck, (or vehicle altogether) and he's concerned about the gas mileage. I assured him for a full truck of that era, that's as efficient as its gonna get. What mpg can he expect? I've done some research and it really seems to vary. If somebody out there's got the same tranny/engine/truck combo, id love to here from your personally, so I can convince my friend to purchase this fine automobile and keep another ford on the road.

Thanks in advance

Jared

I have the same engine/transmission/driveline as that truck and I normally get 12-14 MPG. Not good by any means, but there is a vacuum/EGR issue I need to solve, which should help fuel economy. I've heard people say they can get into the 20's for fuel economy, but expect a good running one to likely get around the mid to upper teens.

My truck is similar, but automatic. Country highways and freeways, I usually get 16-20 mpg. Stick shift might get more. Driving style very much comes into play.

Tell him it pays for itself in pretty girls who need stuff moved. At best he'd find a 90s vintage car that doubles the mileage, so cuts fuel bill in half. Compared to someone buying a brand new truck, in one months payment of savings on the truck it self he'll be able to buy lots of parts and extra gas. That's how I always have looked at fuel mileage (I also buy $20 jeans instead of $80 ones and they look just as blue)

I get about 17 to 19 on mine. Usually about 60/40 highway/city.

Usually keep it around 65 on the highway. Any higher and MPG's drop very quickly.

The seller did mention that there was a hole in the egr tube, but it does not affect the truck at all. This is very good to know, perhaps it is in fact affecting the truck.

Also, thanks to everyone for the quick replies. So he should b expecting anywhere from 15-20mpg with mixed city and highway? Sounds pretty good to me considering my trucks got a 460 hahah. This inline 6s are super reliable and basically bullet proof, from what I hear

Based on the post on the 61-66 forum, The EGR is a gas saver. You will want it operational. 4.9 is a wonderful truck motor. The newer models make peak torque around 1800 rpms and peak HP around 3200. Keep the engine speed close to 1800 and it will do OK on the gas. It is still a full size truck so do not expect econo box numbers.

I had an '81 3/4 ton 2 wheel drive standard cab long box with the 4.9 and manual shift. I don't remember if it was a four or a five speed but it got pretty close to 20 mpg. The '92 should do the same, maybe even a little bit better. If it's in good shape he should buy it
