79 460 rebuild
also what is the most common transmission found in a 79 ford with the 460
Thanks!!!
To answer your question, there are way too many variables to give you a good answer.
Is your truck 2 or 4 wheel drive? Automatic or 4 speed? What kind of a rebuild are you talking about? Just rings and bearings, a full rebuild with machine work, standard or high performance rebuild. Would you do the work or would you want a "turn key" package.
See? all this affects price, even where you live has an effect.
As for the transmission, automatic, only one choice, a C6. Manual, probably the NP435.

Depends... some blocks need only a mild clean up while other blocks will require boring, decking, and line honing. Oversized rings? Oversized pistons? Visit several machine shops and ask them their rates for various machining steps. Shop and compare... Budget at least $800 for machine work.
Then the cost also depends if using "builder" no name parts or whether a mild performance build is planned with parts from the names of Comp Cams, Mahle, Jesel, Federal Mogul, Keith Black, Fel-Pro, Edelbrock etc.
Then it depends on geographic locale.. stuff just costs more out here in CA than the mid-west.
Yeah, buy a new pair cuz "the pair" you got apparently aren't helping. ... OH, DO YOU MEAN CYLINDER HEADS??? Hahahaha... again, it depends. Take offs might be a good deal... sometimes not. Do you know how to inspect heads?
Ask a machine shop how much it would cost to R&R valve seals, a three-angle valve job, lap the valves to the seat, and reassemble. Then compare that cost to a pair of Edelbrock heads.
To keep costs in check you could get a long block from Promar for a little over $2K http://www.promarengine.com/engine-d...ubmodel=Custom and have a warranty.
If your transmission still works (i.e. not broken) you can save big bucks by rebuilding yourself since they don't normally require any machine work. Rebuild kits run $200-$300, I would get a C6 kit from Summit Racing or a manual tranny kit from Novak. Or you can pony up the $$ and buy one from a place like this: http://www.monstertransmission.com/H...on_c_4036.html or this http://www.novak-adapt.com/catalog/t...n_packages.htm
If you bought the engine and transmission from the links above and put them in yourself and threw in a few things like new motor mounts, fluids, etc you would probably be in a little under $4,000 and you would have a warranty on each...but that figure doesn't include shipping.
ALL 1968/82 460's came with C6's.
