replacing steering wheel

I would like to replace my steering wheel. I have an airbag on stock. Does anyone know how to disconnect the airbag safely.
I have a 1996 4x4 Any Ideas would be greatful.

There's nothing to it. When you unplug it, it immediately goes safe. There's no chance of setting it off without a wreck. No energy is stored ANYWHERE to detonate it, so there's no point to unhooking the battery or waiting. Just pull the 4 10mm nuts from the front of the steering wheel, lift the airbag off, and unplug its connector. Totally safe.

I forgot to mention. I will be putting an after market steering wheel that does not use a airbag. Can I leave the wires open or do i need to short them out. So I dont get an air bag light. Sorry.

Just pull the airbag light bulb or the plug on the airbag diagnostic monitor. It's the blue module.
