Engine bay cleaning?

Easy question: what have you found works best to clean your engine bay (to aid in tracking leaks, etc)?
Hose, pressure washer? What type of cleaning agent, degreaser, simple green, or ??
What does a Diesel engine bay need covered before proceeding?
Hints, tips?
Thanks!
Mick

I like O'Reilly's engine cleaner, make sure you get the foaming kind. I just basically spray mine all over, use some common sense, stay away from electrical conectors (some what). Let soak awhile then spray off with garden hose. I like to blow everything off with compressed air then let engine dry for as long as possible (several hours). Best to do this on a very hot day. I' ve washed numerous engines this way and never set off any lights or codes.

As long as you can keep your water out of the oil and air intake, you'll be fine. There's no real complex electronics on our engines, and while you may have temporary weirdness until things dry out if you manage to get water deep into the connections(Note: all the connections are *supposed* to have protective grease on them for this reason), you probably won't hurt anything.
Thinking of my own engine, you might want to come up with some sort of small intake cover so you can pull the air cleaner and then spray behind it without getting water into the intake.

I like the foamy engine brite stuff as well(either Gunk brand or knockoffs), though I've recently found that the local car wash has the stuff 'on tap' so to speak... and per volume, it's somewhat cheaper. Plus, having warm high-psi water to wash things down with? Definite plus.

Once you're done, you do want to dry things off soon -- either give it plenty of compressed air, or take it for a nice highway drive -- the high temps and airflow will soon dry things right out.
