Got a question for you guys.
Whenever the weather is bad or when I off road(not that much) there is a buch of road debris/mud/dirt water that gets into the engine compartment.
My question is can I take a water hose to the engine and spray it clean? Is there anything that I need to cover up or be careful not to get wet?

I usually use an engine degreaser once or twice a year to keep everything fresh in the engine bay. You would need to cover up electrical components typically such as a distributor but more or less you can hit most items with the hose briefly. Obviously don't spray into the intake for any reason and use a soft shower rather than a heavy spray. They degreasers usually tell you to run the engine afterwards to burn off the water left on there. I usually wipe down with one of the damp rags after anway.

good rule of thumb, if engine is cold, spray it; if engine is warm leave it on and spray it, any pressure is fine for either. I stay away from degreasers, its a new engine, it should only have minnor build up that can be easily sprayed off with water.

I still think the degreaser is good once a year or maybe twice but it depends on where and how you drive also. It seems to coat the hoses a bit and keep them from getting brittle, but it could be my imagination. Otherwise, a fine spray followed by wiping down will do on a new motor for sure.
I've always used Simple Green on a cold engine. Then I'm just careful not to blast water into parts that look like they shouldn't get wet. Never had a problem.
