brake line popped...

Didn't quite no where to post this, so i just put it here, cuz i hang out in the I6 forum the most.

The front left steel brake line on my type-POS truck sprung a leak today.

Are there any special tools i'll need to replace the line?

How often should the steel cables be replaced on these trucks anyways?

Cool brake line popped...

Take a look at the rest of them...Is there a lot of salt in your area during the winter?
They are inexpensive, and it can cost a life if they fail!!
Look at the rubber lines too....
Be sure to have some line nut wrenches on hand!!
Brakes are a very important system. Don't try to save too much money here!!

I agree with fred, if one sprung a leak it is likely that the others need a close inspection, also. Closely inspect ALL the brake system. Like fred said make sure you use the line nut wrenches, a regular open end will not cut it. The open end will round off the nut.

These lines may be a pain if they have been in there a long time, and it sounds like they have. If you don't have any line wrenches, don't worry. A LITTLE heat from the torches and a good pair of vice grips will get the nuts out. Don't worry about rounding them, once they're out, throw them away. Get everything new. Each new flare nut might cost $1 or less. Pre fab lines with nuts at both ends are also available.

Brakes and stearing are the two things that you do not mess around with.

If you are gonna use the torches to heat these lines, wear glasses and try not to boil the fluid. If you arn't careful, you can melt the rubber lines, or rubber seals. If you do, replace the part. Wheel cylinders, calipers lines and fluid are inexpensive compared to your life.

I just brought her down to the local garage.

I don't have the time to fix it myself, and my dad lent me the expy for a few days so i can drive that around.

Thanks for the help anyways, i see where you guys are coming from with the special care on brake lines. (it was quite a shock when the truck stopped stopping!)

I had my '90 f-150 for less than 2 days and the line from the left side to the right on the front blew clear off. I replaced the entire front line set from the master cyc down. The most expensive part was the rubber lines, and I think they were 12$

Little hint for future, reuse the fitting at the master cyc, even though I had the right fitting adapter, it leaked like a siv.
