2003 Expedition Misfire

162,000 Miles
4.6l

I had a misfire on cylinder 8 (p0308 and p0316). I swapped the injector with cylinder 4 and reset. Same codes came back. I then swapped coil with cylinder 4 and reset. Now I have codes p300 and p0307, and no cylinder 8 codes. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Could you have knocked any adjacent wires or connectors loose while you were in there?

I have looked around and nothing is loose. Also, #7 is on the other side of the engine from #8.

The #7 and #8 cylinders are the back two on the drivers side. Not on opposite sides of the engine.

Here's a note on the 316 code..."If you own a Ford vehicle and you have a P0316 along with one of the other misfire codes, you should check for appropriate TSBs (technical service bulletins), as there are some TSBs that in part involve reprogramming the PCM. Doing that requires specialized equipment. Some Ford vehicles even needed a new cylinder head as a result of the valve. Regardless, if you have a Ford with multiple misfire codes including this one, check for TSBs."

You may have pointed me in the right direction. I don't know how I got confused on the cylinder numbering. I looked it up on the internet and either read it wrong or saw an incorrect diagram. So what I actually did was: I moved the coil from cylinder 8 to 7 and the problem moved from 8 to 7. I just did not know number 7 was number 7. I will post after I replace the coil.

Thanks a lot for straightening me out on the cylinder numbering.

Glad to hear it was a simple issue. Those COP's can be a bugger!

I swapped the coil from #7 to #6. Now I have code P0174. It still feels like a a misfire, but there is no misfire code. Is it possible that the misfire code will come up after driving it a bit more. The code 0174 popped up very quickly - less than 50 miles of city driving.
