steering column removal

Hi All,
Like the title says, I need to remove my steering column.
I'll back up a bit and say the reason is I am doing a cab swap. This truck came from good ol skatskatchewan and the gravel roads basically sand blasted my floorpan. not to mention the rust that developed from up top under the floor mats.

So I am stripped right down, the cab not me, and I would like to hear from anyone who has done this before. I have never removed a steering column although I have a book, it does not even touch on the subject (Hanes).

I don't mind doing a little exploratory surgery but I prefer not to go into it blind, being as it's the steering and all.

So a couple of pics............

This is where I'm at.

will the column come apart at this point???

Is it a spline shaft inside??

Should I just unbolt it from the steering box???

If anyone has experience with this I would very much appreciate hearing from you.

Thank you
Dave

Those bolts around the base, and one a few inches in front of it, under the hood, going thru the shaft should have it ready to slide out.

5 bolts holding the seal to the floorboard and the single bolt through the shaft on the engine side of the firewall. Be sure to remove the bolt entirely. It pins the shaft rather than acting as a clamp. Tap the joint with a hammer to help free the shaft from the coupler. Shaft has 2 flats perpendicular to the bolt. Also be sure to disconnect the shift rod. Pry apart at the lever at the column or undo the bolt at the linkage.

What do you plan to do about the VIN number when you swap cabs?

I owe you a beer too, thanks

Probably a good idea to use a new bolt when putting it back together eh. But that's a ways away.
Replacement cab will be delivered here next week, box and cab are going to the scrap yard .
Little body work then off to the paint shop.
g

I thought of putting the old vin on the replacement cab

New bolts are always nice, but I would not throw away the old one. I would not hesitate to reuse it, no real concern or danger of a failure here.

Best check with registrar about VIN numbers before you scrap the cab. Frames also have VIN, probably will result in an inspection at the least. May also want to ensure VIN is clean on the donor cab.

I'm in SK. Happy to share a Pilsner with you next time I am in AB. Go Riders!

Dave - I looked, but it seems your questions have been answered already.
Which is good because I don't remember how to remove the column, would have to look it up in a book....

When you pull off the steering wheel shaft from the gear box, watch out for the plastic slip bushing. I took my steering column out and it fell off the gear box shaft into the yard. I found out after having to move the truck and now the big hunt begins to find it......

Hey,
I already have a few 'dropped' items in the grass, my most used tool is my telescoping magnet.

I use the heck outta mine at the shop. Much easier than trying to reach down in some of those places that things like to fall into......

Magnets work really nice, but when plastic parts are dropped......fun begins looking for them.
