I'm not very familiar with the feedback carb setup and I've been trying to help a friend of mine do the conversion to get rid of that junk. What I'm not sure of is what carburetor does he need? We have the distributor, module, and a good harness. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
IIRC the 86 did have the feedback carb. I used to think that those work fine w/the DS-II setup as even w/o the computer they just run slightly rich or lean - I forget which way it goes. But, one guy on here is having fits with his carb and it might be the feedback part.
What I'd do is try it with the existing carb and w/o the computer hooked to it, of course. If it runs well I'd leave it alone. But, if that isn't quite right then you would need the Carter w/o the feedback setup. I don't have a part number for that, but this thread is talking about that carb and that guy just ordered one so would have the info if you need it.
Oh yes, that is the feedback carb as you can easily see the connector. Good pic!

Yep. But someone ran the stock carb, played with a switch or somesuch on the solenoid, and concluded it didn't make much difference. Was that Ken Blythen?
I took my feedback carb apart on my 86 to clean it up and install a kit; there's nothing in it that would make it run richer or leaner than a standard carb. There's an anti-dieseling solenoid on the choke side, a sensor of some sort on the opposite side (appears to measure air flow, but the way it's mounted there's no way it adjusts anything) and a throttle position sensor under the fuel filter. The metering rod is adjustable along with the idle mixture but that's about it. I'd venture to guess that folks seem to think it runs rich when disconnected because without airflow and TPS inputs the EGR never opens and timing never advances since the computer will think it's always at idle.
