Replacing Steering Column/bearings

My steering wheel started to have play in it up and down. I started to look into it and figured the bearings were bad so I ordered all 3 bearings and new collar that fit in top bearing. I finally got all the bearings in and my steering wheel still feels the same. I'm thinking now it may be shaft or something else idk. Everything is tight from bottom of steering column down to steering box so I know it's in column. I'm to the point now I will just buy a used column and put in. Will my key locking mechanism fit in another used column or how does that work?
