Steering column bearings?
79 F100 4x4 - what would cause the steering to bind and then loosen up? Checked the steering box, rag joint, & u-joint - they're all good. Are there bearings in the steering column? That's the only thing I can guess at this point.
If there are bearings, what's the process for replacing them?

To check if it's the bearings, disconnect the shaft that goes from the column to the pump and spin the wheel. I doubt it's the column bearings though. My guess would be the rag joint. Even though it looks ok, it could still be stretched out. Mine was like that and did the same thing you describe. Every now and then that little post would misallign with the groove and bind up. It was hard to actually see it happen. I had to wait for it to bind and have someone pop the hood and take a look.
