I have not myself, but I have been throwing around the idea of installing one of thoses highliner headliners with the three to four speakers and the box for a radio. I figured mounting a CB there would be nice, but as of now I just hate the thought of drilling holes in the roof itself especially after painting the interior.
But I am sure someone else on here has done this before and will respond.
i hear you rusty. if i go with the roof mount id probably get a powerful magnet but i dont know how id run the wires, i hate seeing wires i have to hide them.
There's a dash support bolt under the dash to the left of the ash tray. I drilled a hole in the center of my CB bracket, removed that dash support bolt, and then put that bolt through the CB bracket and then screwed it back to the dash support. Held it nice and tight, and was out of the way, but still close.
However, I had a Cobra 25, which is slightly smaller than the 29. I'm not sure if the Cobra 29 would be in the way of your leg or not. Also, I ran that CB setup before I swapped the truck to 4x4. I'm not sure if the CB would get in the way of the shift lever for the transfer case,
Where you mount it is up to you but I can give you some other advice. You may already know but ill throw it out there anyway. For good performance youll want to run 18 feet of coax, when you coil up the excess run the coils as long as you can. Your ground and possitive need the absolute best connection you can get. Sometimes it doesn't look good but if your antenna is going to be behind the cab it needs to be where the connection for it to the bracket is as high as you can get it, its best for it to be even with the to of the cab. And be very very sure the antenna has a strong ground. All these things can affect the rf levels for the radio and cause feedback which can burn up parts in the radio and not let you get out and receive as good as you could. I have a tuned out cobra 29 swingin 67 watts from a 8' whip antenna that will hang with the big radios
you have everything i have i just need to put it together. im wanting to mount the antenna on top of a headache rack would i get a good ground and good rf levels there? also would magnets affect a cb? im trying to avoid drilling holes in my interior and would like to get a VERY strong magnet to stick on the roof, if i cant do that ill rig some way to run a bar from the window visor screws and rivet the bracket on to the bar, which would probably be the best way to mount the cb. Why didnt i think of that earlier?
Lol I like when people answer their own questions. Ontop of the headache rack is good. Just be sure you have a good ground. I would go as far as running a decent sized wire from the mount to the frame. Not sure on magnetic mounting, never done it. I usually build my mounts custom to bolt it the mid section under the dash
If you have a regular cab, you can mount one on the ceiling. Directly in the middle it is double walled, so I anchored it with a short screw, drilled a hole, and threaded the wire through the double wall and wired into the interior light. Also had a 19 Ultra III/19 DX IV like the one above mounted in the cubby hole beside the steering column. Fit perfect and had a nice factory look.
