I have an 86 3/4 ton 4x4. I mounted my Johnson Blackface right under the dash, a little to the left of center. No problems with that, and I've got two shifters to stay out of the way of.

There seemed to be a ton of room right under the dash. I mounted mine with a 3-outlet strip for accessories because I go camping a lot and sometimes the truck provides the only power.
maybe you guys can help me here too. I have my CB mounted for a while - but it seems I really get a lot of engine noise. I bought some ferrite at radio shack and it didn't seem to help at all. Maybe I just need better ferrite or something???
if you have noise it could be the capaciter on your coil, or your plug wires, or your alternator is on it's way out.what i use is a magnet and you wrap your wires arround it.can't remember what it's called though.just a magnet with a plastic case and you wrap your wires through it and snap it closed.used it on my sirius radio and it got rid of the noise.
I have been told typically they do wonders. You just wrap the red wire around it several times and you are good to go. The problem - they are a little hard to find it seems. I got a crapo one at radio shack that has not been doing the trick. I am just not close to anyone who deals in Amateur Radio or CB so they are harder to find. I have used them in the past tho and got good results.
I mounted mine directly to the inner skin of the roof. I have a quick disconnect panel that I screwed up there and then ran all of the wiring behind the A pillar cover and windshield trim.
Reading this thread has reminded me of how badly i've been wanting to put my CB back in my 83. My only problem is the fact that i have aftermarket gauges installed just to the right of my steering column under the dash. And thats the only place where i could put the CB. I also have to worry about that long T-18 shifter in the way.
Anybody have any ideas other than mounting it to the roof?
If you had a compact unit mount it on the left side of the dash. I'd also consdiered removing my factory radio when it went out and putting the CB in that hole, but it turned out all that was wrong with the radio was a loose wire.
Just to the left hand side of the radio, under the gauges, I have a compartment (which I usually use for my cell phone) and the compact midland CB that I have fits in there. Thinking this through, if you cut out the back of the compartment and the bottom to allow for the speaker and wires, you could place a small CB right in there and use the existing sides for mounting. I am thinking of moving mine from where it is to this spot to free up some space.
