Locking Hubs

Locking Hubs
I just obtained a 69 Bronco which the previous owner said is locked in 4 hi. If I unlock the hubs at the wheels, will that disengage the 4 wheel drive until I can figure out the transfer case problem?

Yes can, but unlocking the hubs will only disengage the hubs from the front axle. With the xfer case in 4 hi it will still make the front d/s turn.
You can drive like this, but I would not do it for a long distance.
Unlock the hubs and remove the front d/s.....you have a Dana 20 straight shift or J shift xfer case?
Also insp the linkage and look for bent/binding rods, cracked bushings, loose hdwr ect....
Have you tried a little out of Hi to N direction lever pressure and blip the throttle a few times?
The pic is a Dana 20 straight shift xfer case and it is in 2wd, see the exposed piston amounts, that is what you are looking for.

Also go into reverse a few ft then try to move transfer out of 4W hi. Both of these proceedures are used even when the rig was new, ie they weren't built like the modern 1s... wrks for non-dammaged parts.
How's things now?
