I just obtained a 69 Bronco which the previous owner said is locked in 4 hi. If I unlock the hubs at the wheels, will that disengage the 4 wheel drive until I can figure out the transfer case problem?

Also go into reverse a few ft then try to move transfer out of 4W hi. Both of these proceedures are used even when the rig was new, ie they weren't built like the modern 1s... wrks for non-dammaged parts.
