Alternator swap

Anyone know if a alternator off a 87 f150 4.9 is the same as 5.0 on a 88 bronco.

Both are probably the same fire-prone 2G alternator. Since you have both in your hands measure them.....but they should be the same.

I wouldn't use either. 3G or nothing. I don't want my truck burning to the ground.

They do look the same. But I had a spare for my '92 300, and it would not physically mount in the bracket for my '92 302.

Unless Ford had a quirk for that year, I know either won't swap.

You can also check O'Reilly s website or AutoZone or advance auto web site and check to see if there are 2 different part numbers.

I tried looking up part numbers but they had like 20 different alternators for each. If it doesnt work anybody know a good place to buy new ones. I refuse to buy autozone electronics they dont last worth of crap. I think napa would be best.

If you have to get a new one seriously consider upgrading to a 3G. At the very least you should get a new connector pigtail for that fire prone 2G. Ford advises to always replace the connector every time it is disconnected.

Good reading in this thread: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...ator-fire.html

The 4.9 takes a 8.25" C-C mounting.
The Windsors use 7" C-C ears.

If you go with a 3G you want one from a 3.8 V6 Taurus/Sable '92-'95 or so.

I'm with you on this automoan electronics problem --NAPA has them beat hands down on quality --- I won't use automoan parts ever again.

A charge cable and 175A megafuse + holder.
30" 4Ga or larger for my 460.
Not sure the length for an I-6

You can reuse your regulator plug if you have a ring terminal for the yellow/white wire and an insulated female spade connector for the white/black stator wire.
