So my truck is great except it's so quiet I can't even hardly hear it run. As far as I know it's a 100% stock set up. The guy did put a new muffler on it and ran new pipe from what looks like the cat back.
I know guys replace the rear cat with a glasspack but in order to get dual pipes coming out the side what do I need to get?
If this is anything like the Mustang forum I'm a member of an exhaust question comes up at least once a week so pardon the newbie question.
What I would like to do is have the drivers side pipe coming out under the 4x4 sticker before the bumper like it is on the left side and have a glasspack or two under the truck. Summit sells their glasspack for like $25 so I'm thinking I could easily just replace the cat w/ one of those for cheap but what would all be involved to make it dual? Doesn't need to be a "true dual" I'm just looking for some better sound and look of dual. Thoughts?
True duals are the way to go, but if you want to get the proper sound with the appearance of duals but not running all new pipes here's what you need to do. If your on a state with emissions testing, get a high flow cat from summit. If your not under emissions testing, ditch the cat entirely. Next, get rid of whatever new muffler they out on it. To get the appearance of duals with a glass pack without true duals, you need to get a y splitter to go after the muffler like this one http://www.summitracing.com/parts/mpe-10778/overview/
Talking from experience, I wouldn't put glass pack on one of these trucks. I used to have a single 3 inch pipe with no cat, a 24 inch glass pack, and a turn down after the rear axle. It had a vicious sound, but the cab drone was horrible and I couldn't have a conversation or hear the radio. I had that setup for about 3 months. Now I have a turbo muffler recommended by my dad. There is no sound from the exhaust whatsoever going down the highway. But when you open it up from a standing start or under a bridge, it has a mean sound. I'd strongly suggest a turbo muffler but it's your truck.
True duals are NOT the way to go. They net almost no power gain over a properly sized single and cost twice as much. Most of the time someone does duals, they go with way to big of pipe and kill the bottom end.
If you want a decent setup, buy a Magnaflow catted y-pipe and a cat back of your choice that has dual exits. Try to keep all of the single pipe section below 3" in diameter, 2.75" would be great, and have the tailpipes be about 2", 2.25" at most. Then get whatever tips you want. You don't want to go too big on the pipe sizing otherwise you will loose bottom end power.
Thanks guys, I'm not going to go big on pipe, in fact I'd like to just keep it stock size and probably won't even run tips. Just cut off at the ends. No emissions tested required since the truck is older than a 1996. Thank God I didn't end up w/ a 1996 F150 lol.
I'm surprise though it was that loud Truck Guy. I was thinking of doing 2 18'' glasspacks. Guess I better not do that b/c I don't want it droning that bad!
I test drove one w/ 2 Flowmaster 40s. Don't know the whole set up but it must have still had the cat b/c it was not near as loud as I expected. In fact it was not even loud at all to me. I will check out the Turbo muffler, does anybody else have any suggestions? Gonna do some exhaust research on here tonight too...
Having the rumble from the exhaust sounds cool but as the other said, basically Unrestricted exhaust usually means you lose power. If you want a dual look, just put a splitter on you existing muffler and run a pipe to the other side. Keeping the truck quiet means you don't have to turn the radio up so high either. But if I were to do Mine, I'd probably use this system:In Stainless Dual - 2.5" Cat-Back System - Super Turbo
