I've been told to do it with a cold engine and try not to spray on the power distribution box
thats how I do it and haven't had any trouble hope this helps.
I used to detail cars on the side in college and have done tons of engine cleanups, including my powerstroke. My method is give everything a good soak with simple green, hit really grimmy areas with purple power or engine degreaser. let sit for a minute or two and then "lightly" pressure wash everything, try not to directly spray any electronics. Then start the vehicle and let it run for a couple minutes. Then the key is to leave the hood open in a sunny area for another hour or two, that way all the remaining water and moisture is dried up. Never had an issue doing it that way.
