I thought my 1970 F350 had a steering problem. It made crunching noises which sounded like it was coming from the column. I thought it needed new bearings. Also, when I turned the wheel there was a spot where it seemed like it would catch or like the worm gear had a worn spot.
Today I stopped at the guy that painted my 54 F100 in 1999. I asked him to look at it. I explained the symptoms and he said your cab mounts are probably shot. He lifted the hood and told me to turn the wheel and he could see it binding. He said a temporary fix is to jack it up and stick a 2x4 between the cab floor and the frame. He called it an old farmers trick. It worked and the truck steers like a dream.
I have read discussions about 2 different kinds of front cab mounts of 2 different quality.
I am in the middle of mounting mine. I went with the Dennis Carpenter mounts.
Pro - The metal is pretty much the same thickness as the original metal which makes welding them in pretty foolproof.
Con - The fit is just a little off. The top edge fits good, the vertical edges need some working which then makes the horizontal piece need a little work.
FWIW - this is the first time I am doing any type of metal work so the fit could be due to my floor pan fit.
You get what you pay for when it comes to cab mounts after 3 yrs.
DC are a little high but no other seller other oem type that, I know of.
$89.00 apiece as you can see the funky $29 buck one is to thin & soft of metal.
