I am going through a '71 Ford Ranger XLT, with a 360 V8, 3 on-the-tree. The truck will pull anything but doesn't have what I'd consider a lot of power/torque. I am new to the mechanic and auto refurbish world but I'm curious as to what I can do to improve horse power.thanks
For more pulling power a longer stroke crankshaft is a good change. A stock 428 crankshaft will fit or you can find ones from SCAT that have an even longer stroke, I think they go up to 4.250". The longer stroke equals a longer lever, like when you use a longer wrench to turn a bolt.
After that you can do all kinds of things to increase the amount of aif/fuel you get into the cylinders. Like using a camshaft with more lift and duration, an intake manifold that can flow more air, a larger carburetor that can flow more air and add more fuel, exhaust headers which can flow more exhaust. All of those item should be matched, such as buying them all in a certain series from a manufacturer. It doesn't do much of any good to make a bigger intake system if the exhuast sytem isn't bigger as well.
If the engine is sound and tuned up, I would start with headers and dual exhaust, then intake manifold. If that is where you are planning to stop, then choose a 390 Performer or find an old Streetmaster. If you are going to go into the engine, Turbohunter has a sweet build with 500lb-ft of torque at 3100 rpm

I'd do a compression test first to see what the condition is of the internal working parts of your engine. Then you can go from their if all the cylinder have up to par compression reading.
It's almost endless of throwing aftermarket parts in these old classics
A lot of little thing that all add up to more power and some help get a little better mpg.
Replace air filter with a K&N small gain of air being sucked it.
Dual exh 2.5" pipes & headers free flow mufflers
After market Intake manifold with 4 barrel carb 600-670 cfm are well suited
Hotter ign system help burn the fuel better.
These are all good basics things that most truck guys do for a little more pep!
