Vehicle Speed Sensor

Got An issue with the speed sensor in a 1993 E350 motor home.
Sometimes the the speedometer needle fluctuates wildly.
Also this causes it to shift roughly & sometimes it dies when attempting to back up.
Where is the VSS located on this truck & could it be just a bad connection?

It could be a bad sensor, a bad connection, or a damaged wire.

The sensor is on top of the differential on the rear axle.

Thanks,
I'll see what I can determine tomorrow.
At least I'll know where to start looking.

Could also be the PSOM inside the speedometer cluster gone bad. That will play havoc with the transmission's operation.

Good point. I keep forgetting about the PSOM. Maybe it's my mind trying to forget bad things....

Oh yeah---discovered that my own self. Cluster assemblies from different years are most often NOT compatible!

bouncing speedo

A bad speed sensor of my 1996 e150 caused my speedo to bounce. when i changed it the bounce went away . i also had the problem of the van stalling when put into reverse . after i gave the van a complete tune up the stalling went away. good luck . lets us know what the fix is . thanks

True but the speedometer head and the PSOM are the same from 1993-1996 for the E & the F-series trucks.
The 1992 may also work.
The speedometer head in most vans will go to 85mph where the truck go to 80.
You can also copy the mileage and calibration from you old PSOM to the new one if you are a electronics technician with a computer and a EEPROM programer.

Thanks for the help.
Couldn't see any damaged wires & the connection looked good, so I replaced the Speed sensor on the rear end & cleared the trouble.

Vehicle speed sensor location

I have a 95 E350 Winnebago. And I lost speedometer and odometer with hard hitting since I lost OD. I bought the part but can't locate the sensor. I replaced the little sensor in the rear end for safe measures because my abs light was on aswell but this one I think goes to the speed cable into the tranny. Just can not find it. Thanks for any help

On a '95 the speedo isn't normally cable driven it's all electronic, is the ODO on your cluster LCD or is it the old rotating mechanical thing?

You have no speed cable. The one you replaced on the rear end is the only one you have for a speed sensor.
It sounds like you the E4OD transmission and their is no sensor on the transmission other than the range sensor.

Did replacing the speed sensor turn off your ABS light?
Do you still have shifting problems?

Wanted to say you were right on only one sensor. I replaced the cluster with a used one since they are no longer sold new. And alomost everything is back to normal. Including smooth shifting. Just the abs light comes on at times but really not a huge concern for me could be the abs module.
