2001 Escape XLT has P0420 code :( Help!

Some of you have been very helpful in helping me fix some of the problems I had when I got this escape, I have one more now! It has been running very smooth since I changed the lower intake gaskets, and I just went on a 1500 mile round trip roadtrip. It ran perfect the whole way, getting 22mpg to boot. In the last 50 miles, the CEL came one. The code read P0420 which is the cat converter? I dont want to fork up for a new one, are there any tricks to get this fixed or cleared?

Tricks? Spark pug anti-fouler or MIL-eliminator.

Emissions testing? OBD-II only or does it include a tailpipe test? The tail pipe test may still probably fail.

Which engine do you have? 4 cyl or V6 3.0? For some reason, I was thinking the V6 told if it were the front or rear bank cat failure.

update: My escape ran fine, so i figured it wasnt the cat. I changed the gas cap but the cel stayed on. I drove it on a near 2000 mile road trip and it ran fine. Somewhere along the trip the cel went out on its own, then came back on later. All this leads me to believe its an 02 sensor, but since there are 3 cats on this model, which one is it?

BTW, I have a v6 XLT
