so i will start off by saying this is my first diesel. i bought a 1985 f-250, that someone had already taken the 6.9 idi out and replaced it with a 7.3 idi. it looks as if a 12 year old had wired up this truck under the hood, the glow plugs did not work, it would start with ether but not without, the only problem the truck had is what i am trying to fix now. The truck would not stop running unless i killed it with the clutch. i have since replaced the body of that truck with the body from a 90 f-150, and while i am still in the wiring stage, i would like to fix it to where i can kill the engine with the key. So another question would be, is the injector pump ran mechanically, or electronically? i have also replaced the glow plugs, and made a new wiring harness for the truck because the old wiring harness was burnt. i had to run the glow plugs to a push button and the injector pump used to have 2 wires that was on the old harness. How does the fuel shut off solenoid work and is it possible to run that particular part able to be wired to a toggle? any additional info would greatly help me out. thx
You have done a lot of the right things.. the IP needs switched power to the fuel cutoff connection closest to the fire wall. the front connection is for the timing advance and High Idle. It gets power through the coolant temp switch on the front passenger side of the head that controls the advance to shut off about 120* if I remember correctly... the factory uses the same switched power to that switch as it uses for the fuel cutoff. I ran my advance and High Idle to separate switches. although I did set it up so it has to be on High Idle to use the advance. Using a push button for the Glows is ok but remember the controller gives the glows intermittent shots of power after the wait to start light goes out so when using a push button it will help it start and keep from dropping a cylinder if you pulse the push button after the engine starts for 20 0r 30 seconds. then there will be enough heat to keep it running. Keep up the hard work you will get her done....
