Just curious, what would a 4 bbl carb do on one of these engines with the stock manifold besides drain your gas tanks? ~Bill
It would not even do that. It probably would not run well enough to even work.
Think of the carb like a paint spray gun. That's really exactly how it works, lots of airflow passing by, picking up fuel and atomizing it. If you have a huge carb throat with air passing by, and then it necks down to a very small hole in the intake, it fouls your airflow all up.

so no good reason to go to a 4 barrel carb on a 6 cylinder engine?

With a proper intake, they work fine, so long as you don't try slapping a huge CFM rated carb on it. 500 CFM is plenty for a 300, in the RPM range it is capable of being used in without heavy internal mods.
The 1bbl carb/intake only has a 1-1/2 or 1-3/4" hole for the air to flow thru. Sticking a 4bbl carb over that, will give the same net airflow that the 1bbl carb can give, yet have a rather restricted path to follow.
