hey guys,
Im usually on the 87-96 forum but I thought Id bring something up thats been bugging me for a while...
Has anybody heard of an 80-86 extended cab short bed? I know they are rare in the 87-91 series, but much more common in the 92-97.
I think an extended cab short bed in a 80-86 would look super sweet. Do they exist? Does anybody own one, or have pictures of one? Even a short bed conversion would be sweet.
let me know if you guys have any pictures, or have heard of/seen any...
No. Supercabs had two doors and you had to climb into the back like a two door coupe.
Ii is synonomous with "extended cab" which Ford didn't use til later.
I have a 83 Supercab, bought it new. It has the 8 ft bed which is seen less often.
The Crew Cabs had four doors with an even longer chassis.
ahhhhh ok. So I take it they started calling them extended cabs in 1987? back to the original topic... nobody has heard of/seen a super cab short bed in the 80-86 series?
Yup, they exist. I've seen a handful of them in person, and I know where one or two are sitting now. They're not too common, but they are around. The supercabs of this gen are just like the 87-91, the rear smaller side windows have that vertical slot type thing. All the shortbed supercabs would be F150s (F100s probably too in the earlier 80s). Any F250+ supercab would have the full length 8' bed.
Ford did NOT make short bed crew cabs (four full doors) in this generation, though. I only think they brought the F250 shortbed crew cab back in like '92.

EDIT: Here's a pic for ya.
thanks for the pic, man does that thing look sweet. If i had the funds I would try and get my hands on one of those. Would you guys say that a 80-86 supercab short bed would be the same length as a 80-86 single cab long bed?
Thanks for clearing that up Brad. I always get confused when it comes to these things, you'd think they would just keep the same names haha.
Well, it's not Ford's fault that they don't. Ford was the first full size truck with a bigger cab with a downsized rear seat. Having created the breed, they created the name, SuperCab, that they've always used. Everyone else has added new names and confusion, but Ford's been consistent.
Having said that, Datsun / Nissan had a similar cab available pretty early, called a King Cab I think. I think it still came after Ford's SuperCab, but I'm not sure of that.
Extended just had 2 doors with a seat in back reached by tilting the seat backs or seat forward. Supercabs had 4 doors.
Extended (a generic term) is another name for a Club Cab (Dodge), King Cab (Nissan), Super Cab (Ford) and etc. F100/350 Super Cabs were introduced in 1974, none offered rear doors until 1997.
Originally only available with a front bench seat with split backs. By moving a lever, the backrests folded forward allowing access to the rear bench seat or R/L jump seats that were only fit for kiddies.
You might fit on one a those jump seats, but Mr. Clean and I would be horribly uncomfortable. Mr. Clean is tall 'n skinny with bird legs, while I'm tall, not skinny with Steinway legs.
People complained that the rear bench was mounted too low, so circa 1985, Ford came out with the accessory High Setter Kit that raised the rear bench seat up by 4 inches.
At the same time, Ford also introduced two new accessories. (1) Lockable storage compartment (2) Lockable gun safe, fit under the rear bench seat once the High Setter was installed.
frito-bandito: Dodge introduced the first factory extended cab in 1973, calling it the Club Cab.
