My 89 7.3 when I firdt fire it up in the morning (or when the motor is cold) it knocks real bad for about 10 sec or less. I'm just concerned about it because currently it is my only wheels. Any help on what may be wrong or if it is normal your comments would be helpful.
I suspect that you have one bad glow plug. I have had this happen to me personally :-).
What happens is the engine starts on 7,6,5 cylinders (depending on how many plugs have failed) and as the compression activity in the other cylinders heats them up they will join in.
Until they join in, fuel is being deposited into the cylinder which will not burn at the proper time, creating a 'knock'.
