I was just wondering what kind of oil most of you use in your diesels. It's high time for an oil change in our truck. I think we have Rotella T 5W-30 in it now. Is this the right type to be using? Also what kind of oil filters are you using?
The truck has 195,000 miles on. (we think! it might be 295,000). I live in lower South Carolina so right now it's HOT! It seems to run best around 80 degrees. Thanks for any info!
I run Tech 2000 (Walmart brand) 15W-40 with a Motorcraft PSD filter. I change the oil every 3-4K miles. It has 215,000 miles on it and doesn't use any oil.
I think I'm going to go with Rotella 15w40 and a motorcraft filter. It badly needs changing. It's got four thousand miles and ten months on the oil and filter in there. I'd have changed it long before now BUT it's not my truck.... I know the oil must be decomposing by now. Good thing I've got a TOUGH engine!
I use Caterpillar 15w40 in my 86 F-250 6.9. This truck has never had any other brand of oil in it in the last 12 years. I work for Caterpillar and my father has worked for the dealership here locally since I was born. I bought this truck from him last year. A 5 gal. bucket runs around $35 which is 2 oil changes. I never need to add beteewn changes. I once was going to buy Delco 400 and save $5, but when I talked to him
he told me not to bother. I aksed him what the differance was and he said that Caterpillar's additives don't break down as fast as other oils.
I have been back to the quality lab in Peoria, Ill
were they sample test the hardware used on the tractors and I now truly believe in there commitment to quality. Good luck on your choice
