Excursion Air Conditioner Problem

Hello All...

I have a 2002 V10 Excursion and have a problem with the air conditioner. The unit blows cold (eventually), but the speed randomly blows high even with the setting at a lower position, sometimes more frequently than others. This is only a problem for the air blowing out of the dash vents, not the overhead/rear. It is not constant, but enough want to address. I thought it might have something to do with the temperature setting, that it might be self-adjusting based on the temperature inside the cabin, but I'm not sure these have that ability and the fluctuation is too random. I also thought it might have something to do with the blower motor, but may be more likely an electrical issue. Any ideas?

Thank you...

sounds like you have a vacuum leak..

You didn't say, but I'll guess you have 4 wd..
The 4x4 hubs are often the culprit.

Yes, 4WD...I think you sent me off in the right direction...a vacuum leak. I found a few threads that are related to my problem. Now, the terrible task of figuring out where exactly the leak is. Thank you for the help, Misky.

Whoa! Back up and get a better definition on the symptoms.

A vacuum leak will not affect blower speed, it will affect where the air comes out. When vacuum is lost, airflow defaults to the defroster.

If it is an issue with the blower motor changing speed, then the next question has to be whether you have the electronic or the manual climate control. Variations in the blower speed shouldn't be possible on a manual system. On an electronic system, your most likely cause would be the blower speed control module (not too expensive) or the EATC which controls the actual controller (driver) module (ouch!).

One other possibility might be if the recirculation door is flopping around. That would cause the unit to behave as if it's being switched back and forth between MAX and normal A/C. Probably a long shot on this one.

Well, that makes sense because the air is not inadvertently blowing through the defroster vents. Also, I do have the electronic climate control, so it could be one of the issues you suggested. When I get a chance to start troubleshooting, I will check the blower speed control module and the recirculation door first...thank you for your clarification and help. I always appreciate everyone's feedback in these forums...
