Hello all! I have a problem I really would like help with. I have a 1974 f250 with a 460 and auto c6. The cluster lights used to all work fine and dimmed properly but I recently did some work behind my dash and when I put it back together the left side lights did not work in the cluster.
I checked the fuse
I switched the bulbs around
I'm not sure what it could be. after looking around online I am thinking it could be:
damaged a wire somehow
bad headlight switch
bad instrument cluster voltage regulator
damaged cluster (printed thing)
I'm not really sure but I think I might have damaged something as this was my first time removing. all the gauges did work before and still work, just the lights (oil, fuel and half the speedometer) dont work at all.
I have a green back, 100mph cluster with the volt and water on the right.
Please describe what work you did before the problem occurred. To confirm, the RIGHT side of the cluster lights up, but the LEFT side does not? When you switched the bulbs around, what happened? All you said was that you tried it; you didn't actually say the results. I know you know the answer, but I don't unless you type it out.
I was trying to run a wire to a toggle for aux lights. Yes the right side now is the only working side, and I switched the bulbs and the left side bulbs are ok. So I'm certain its not the bulbs because I switched them around until I tried them all on the right side of the cluster
If its not in very good condition, you moving the bulbs around might have made it where the left side bulbs dont make good contact with the circuit panel.
MK's idea is about the only thing it can be. If the RIGHT side works, power is getting to the cluster just fine. That vets out the fuse, cluster connection, and contacts where the cluster connector goes. The cluster is a lot more brittle than you think. Simply removing and replacing a bulb can be enough to break away some of the mating area and the bulb won't seat appropriately. There may be a lot of damage to the cluster behind the cellophane circuit that you can't see.
I picked up a new cluster from a 1973 f100 at pick and pull. Exactly the same, 100 mph, green back and no dummy lights. I also got new bulbs just in case. so ill put it in and report back.
hey guys thanks for the advice, but it was just the cluster! the new one worked like a charm and I popped the blue covers off inside the cluster and with the new bulbs its very bright now and I prefer the yellow haha here is a picture kinda blurry but you get the idea.

Be aware that the instrument cluster backs used on 1973/74 F100/350's are not the same as 1975/79 F100/350's. The printed circuit boards are also different.
And...with or without oil and amp gauges...also makes a difference.
