hello everybody i just bought a 84 ford f250 6.9 and they said it was hard to start. so i started changing glow plugs and one i had a problem with.i needed to rewire because the wire was slit and i thought it as corroded but i tryed it and it fired right up and i tryed it again alittle bit later and it would not start just fire and i got told it was on fire around the glow plug and the wire on the inner fender was burnt and i went and changed that glow plug (only changed the bad ones) and i ran into this. i was wondering if i should worry about this. and do i have to pull the head.thank you
Well it doesn't look like a fresh break. I also ran into the same problem when I was changing my glow plugs as well... I ended up pulling the driver side head because I did not have the piston at TDC to catch the broken tip. you can try and rotate the engine over by hand to see if there is a broken peace in there, if it doesn't rotate over by hand then you know you have a broken tip in the cylinder.. I will find my thread about the glow plug and post it here in a few
Found it! Lol there's some other good information in there as well and you will see what kind of damage is done if you start the engine with the glow plug tip still in there. The previous owner of my truck got lucky and didn't blow a hole in the piston

hx for the reply it was rotating when it started on fire so i will try to to see if it will turn by hand
You know I didn't even think about that, I have a few of those still laying around! Now what would you fill the center with? Might be a good idea lol because that is how I still time mine

That's a good question. I've heard of people turning old GPs into Lumy's, but I have no clue what they are putting in them.
good news i talked to a diesel shop they said said anything that if the brake is anything over 1/8 of an inch will do damage. Since i had no where close i turned it over and no noise so i fired it up and its runs great. No more hard start. Thanks every one
Well that's absurd, chalk that up as another 'shop' that doesn't know what they're talking about. There is no specific size of any piece of metal that's allowable in the piston area, ANY chunk of ANY size that gets wedged between a piston and the cylinder wall will cause major damage.
