diesel fuel and heating oil longevity

Hello all,

I just got my 91 f350 7.3 , im a new diesel owner. my company has a old underground heating oil tank that they have not used in 5 years, it has 500 gallons of heating oil in it. i know you can use diesel in oil heaters for your house, but does that work both ways? can you use heating oil in your diesel truck? and does the heating oil go bad like normal gas would after sitting that long, if i can use it i want to pump it out, at over 4 bucks a gallon where i live for diesel , 500 gallons will get me along way.

just asking, i would think it would not be a good idea, however i want to ask the pro's here

Thanks
Dave

The heating oil is usally pure cerosene/paraffin without any lubricant/oil in it so it won't smoke/soot, but if you are using it, mix it with a good dash of 2-stroke oil,
but you would need to mix it outside the tank so it would blend properly though

The definition of heating oil can vary by location. In Alaska (where I used to live years ago), heating oil is Kerosene which is equivalent to #1 diesel or Jet A all with a pour point of -50. No air pollution regulations so I would burn any of it in my stove. It has a long shelf life above ground and even longer below ground. Water would be my main concern as condensation forms in the tanks. Mix it 50/50 with the pump diesel and that should address any lubrication concerns.

I specifically bought a diesel truck for my rural property because it sits unused most of the time. It is tough to keep the gas fresh enough not to have problems even with Stabil. I fight it with my gas 8N tractor constantly.

heating oil as of 2004 in 15 western states is Diesel fuel, it is all ULSD now and even if it was low sulfur (the old stuff) it won't hurt your IDi, use a filter before your pump (to protect your pump) and don't draw it from the bottom, incase it has water on the bottom, they make a paste to detect water, if you know some one like me that hauls fuel, you could get some, most under ground tanks are 550 or 500 the largest would be 1000 or 1100 about 45 inches deep approx. 100 or 200 gallons per 10.5 inches some fuel additive might be good idea and blending with new Diesel won't hurt, I have run my IDi on 50% moter oil ran great..in order for algae to form there must be water for it to live in, it does not live in Diesel, the dead particles of algae, will float in Diesel, it is these particles that plug filters, Algae doesn't ruin the Diesel, just filter it to 10 microns.

That's a hell of a find. Congrats. I bet your truck will love it.

DO NOT run that stuff straight. 50/50 should be fine, but i would add some diesel kleen, or stanadyne. I was in the same boat, about 300 gallons, wiped my pump of admittedly unknown condition in short order, i was running 50% #1 50% WMO
