my '90 has the sensor and it is hooked up to a wiring harness, as far as I know it is part of the shift control to allow higher rpms before shifting at higher altitudes

ECM = Engine Control Module
TCM = Transmission Control Module
PCM = Powertrain Control Module (ECM+TCM combined)
That it is electronic is implied.
