I have a 79 ford f150 and I can get it to start... Runs for maybe a second or two, then dies. I can keep it running (very rrough) by pumping the gas peddle. I put in a new fuel pump a couple years ago, and electronic ignition and coil about the same time. Haven't put 500 miles on it since. Can someone help me trouble shoot this? Thanks.
Sounds like either a fuel problem or a vacuum leak.
Pumping the gas means either you're getting fuel into the engine via the accelerator pump instead of it being metered by the carb. or there's avacuum leak making the engine run lean and pumping the gas adds enough fuel to keep it going.
Check for vacuum leaks and plan on rebuilding the carb.
My first guess would be it's time for a carb rebuild.
I was thinking vacuum leak, but cant find it. I filled it up with gas this winter. I can swear I hear a vacuum leak, but again... All the regular hoses look just fine and attached. Will run a few seconds with a shot of ether.
Must add... Runs normal with starting fluid until it burns out. Before this started, my problem was it wouldnt start if it was hot, but would fire right up cold. Not sure if its related. Sucks trouble shooting multiple problems. Also, noticed there is no fuel filter.

I agree with above gunked up carb or vacuum leak. I'd search real hard for a vacuum leak. May want to disconnect and plug off the carb vacuum ports and give her a go.

Ok... Guess I will tear the carb down and start there. Thanks for all the input. Cant wait to get this old truck up and running! Im sure I will be posting plenty of questions on rebuilding this holly. Happy Memorial day fellas!
