Things seem to be going well getting this new engine up and running. Now my problem is that it is hard to start, doesn't idle unless I give it a bit of gas, and dies if I let off the gas. When starting it, I have to pump the gas alot and let it crank for awhile before it starts. I have no idea what this could be, maybe fuel pump or something. This is a 1981 F100 with the I6 300 engine and original Carter single barrel carb.
sounds like a vacuum leak. with engine running gradually choke off air to carb.at choke plate and see if that smooths it out.if it does it is a vacuum leak. spray carb spray around intake and carb.and base and anyplace where there could be a vacuum leak.
check for bad vacuum lines also. good luck.
Look around the base of the carb for staining of gas leaking out. A lot of times old carbs lose gas in the carb when sitting for any length of time. This then says you need a carb kit or change carbs with a new one or rebuild.
This happens quite often.
Also when you rebuild an engine. The old starters can have turning the engine due to the new compression. Had this happen a couple of times. Usually a new starter fixes that problem, because the old starter is a bit tired.
Get a carb kit and dont forget to spray some carb cleaner in there when you disassemble the carb, usually you'll find rust inside the carb when you take them apart. Single barrel carter carbs are real easy to rebuild so it shouldnt be a problem.
