Squealing drive belt problem

Just finished replacing the Timing Chain Cover gasket, Water pump, Idler pulley & Tensioner & pulley. With everything back together.
The drive belt is squealing. When spraying water on the grooved side of the belt the squealing stops. It also seems to be coming from either the AC Clutch or the Power Steering pump. It's not the Alternator. The Power Steering pump pulley had some play in & out of the pump when the belt was off.

Questions:
1. Is the play in the power steering pulley normal?
2. Is the play in the Power Steering pulley the bearing on the pulley or is it the power steering pump itself?
3. Is it possible to remove the PS pulley with the pump still mounted in the vehicle? There appears to be some room for the puller?
4. Is there a way to clearly determine if its the AC pulley or the PS pulley?

I may loosen the bolts that are holding the AC & PS Bracket to see if a small repositioning of the bracket makes a difference. After retightening the bolts.

The PS Pump should have No Play side to side or Very Very Little this way

In Out Play maybe but not much maybe 1/8th inch is acceptable But I wouldn't worry about IN & Out play unless its A lot like 1/4inch or more

Sounds like your right on track to align it
and I bet that works since water makes it go away with some Slipage of the Belt

If the alignment don't work check the accessories with belt off maybe something is starting to seize IDK

Just random thoughts these guys would know more into the specifics than I

You didnt indicate if ou R&Rd the belt! If not the belt could be worn enough to slip since its been apart and maybe, even placed on in reverse direction that worked against its memory? As to pulling the belt off best ya could do then would be to try and spin the associated pully's by hand but really I dont think that would tell ya anything particularly the ps unit. Ac with switch off should rotate freely, as should the alternator.

Thanks Blade35. Play is more like 1/8 inch not 1/4 inch. Also did check each component with the belt removed & only the PS pulley was the only issue I felt worth mentioning. Planning to loosen the bracket & seeing if I can reposition it to make it stop squealing.

Belt was removed when replacing mentioned components. Never have hear to put the belt back on with it going the same way. All I can do now is flip it around & see if it helps. Belt is in excellent condition. Looks brand new with no cracks.

Check the idler. Mine froze up and smoked the belt.

Read once someplace that the plies in the belt will develop a memory, dont remember where. Just like they used to say the old type radials did dont know but its something to think about. I used the gatorback brand belts by goodyear and had good luck with them, I think they are now gone, but a belt is relatively cheap and since you replaced all the components except the driven stuff, it may be a good opportunity to do so now. looks can be deceiving.

As stated in the opening post I've already replaced the idler.

I've removed the belt again and have not loosen the bracket yet to see if it could be an alignment issue. This is due to looking at the PS pump closer. I'm not sure how freely it should turn but it doesn't turn freely at all. It only turns when you turn it by hand once you let it go it stops. There is also some small pieces of rubber in grooves. Not much but some. I purchased the Ranger a few weeks ago so the drive belt could have been replaced recently because I do not see any missing pieces. The grooves on the PS pump pulley may be coated with rubber as well. Unlike the AC pulley which looks like its all metal grooves. Will post pictures once I figure out how. I'm starting to think the PS pump is not keeping up with the belt causing the fiction & squealing.

Here are the pictures:

The PS pump will not freewheel. It takes power to turn it

Considering all the other work that was done first & the fact that the belt did not make any noise before I started. I wouldn't have thought I would need to replace the belt to get rid of the squeal but that was just what I did to fix the noise. All along I was thinking somehow I ended up with something out of plane causing a miss alignment resulting in the noise. So my task of fixing a coolant leak is complete. Thanks for all that helped out along the way.
