Removing column

Section 3 of the manual has nothing on removing the column only of the steering wheel and steering gear. So what do I need to take apart here? Remove all the bolts as I can't see how this stuff, as pictured, actually goes through the firewall.

Once you get the rag joint bolt, the clamp around the bottom of the shield, the bolts in the shield, shifter, and the rubber inside the shield. Two bolts under the dash. The hole under the shield is big enough to past though.

Maybe I'll just leave the column in as is and not paint it. After two hours it is still in the truck. Inside bracket nuts and terminals easy. Two nuts for the rag joint no problem. Trying to disconnect the shifter arm from the transmission shift rod impossible. Looks like some sort of clip which spins but not about to exert tremendous force on it to see if it comes off or snaps. Then don't see how the shifter arm will ever get through the hole in the firewall.

Grasp with pliers, then yank it off.
379620-S100 .. 'Wavy' (aka semi cupped shaped) Spring Steel Clip ~ 3/4" O.D. x 9/32" I.D. / Retains A/T shift rod to selector lever on column. When installed this clip flattens out.

Also used with 3 M/T, retains shift rods to column selector levers and to trans levers.

Here's the M/T pic (at upper left) of the little charmer, I couldn't find an A/T pic. Note: Standard parts may/may not have the complete suffix when shown in pics.

379620-S100 is obsolete, but 1000's available NOS. 3 dealers in CA (Susanville/Escalon/Calexico) have it, Green Sales has 24 and Carpenter has 2,607.
