Upgrading charging cable is necessity
When you convert to a higher than stock output 3G alternator, running a heavier gauge charging cable is not optional. The higher output will fry the fusible link. Run at least a 4 gauge wire, preferably with a high amperage fuse (you want it about the same rating as the alternator you are using.

I was thinking that even if you DON'T upgrade your alternator, it's a good idea to upgrade the wires. The stock wires that Ford (and it seems most manufacturers) uses seem just adequate for their purposes.
