Is it possible to crimp on a new end to the large on cable to the alternator? I was in the process of changing out the alternator and was pulling off the boot on the cable and it broke off. Based on the break it appears that it was close to breaking prior to my applying force to it get the boot off.
As stated, check out the condition of the existing cable, you may want to replace the whole thing. Soldering is by far better, where crimping will work. Longevity, the solder will be taking up any space for moisture thus reducing the amount of corrosion at that point. I have an additional 4awg cable going from the alt stud to the driver side battery. Helps with overall charging efficiency.
The condition of the break was very clean it just was broken off no corrision. I plan on cripmping and soldering. Just want to know if there are any other problems to be considering as I will replace the complete cable in the spring just need to get through winter, I am a CPA and this is tax season and I don't have any extra tine to mess with the truck.
When you do get the time, do what Cangim and I have done, install a couple of booster cables between the alternator and the battery. It will offload the heavy duty charging from the truck's wiring harness to the auxiliary cables and keep that factory connection from overheating and getting weak like your's did.
