Yeah that actually has me scratchun' my head as to why you would want to put a modern motor in it.
To me that's an FE or 460 deal.
Kinda curious about your thought process Tim.
Nothing wrong with it, just curious.
I know this is looking to be a little difficult. Hence, why I am going to be a little slow and methodical.
I also have a 59 Bel Air which is LS powered that I built a few years ago. I love the power, reliability, and economy.
The purist in me, hates to screw with the truck. The hotrodder in me, wants to make it better.
I had been looking for a truck for a few years now that frankly............had not been screwed with. This truck has all of the emissions, vacuum hoses, canisters, and ported vacuum switches (no converter). It is a one repaint Texas truck that is REALLY nice underneath. I know, I am proposing to screw with it.
I knew this would stir the pot on a site like this. I will make clear, that is not why I posted here.
Recently (since I bought the truck) I have replaced the C bushings, radius arm bushings, and many other little items to make the truck drive much better (it's still a 79 Ford at the end of the day). I am happy with how the truck drives now.
Now, I thought I could improve the whole package without taking away from the vintage curb appeal of the truck.
BTW, I bought this for my dog, Korbel (Chocolate Lab on the left). Old guy, old dog, old truck
Furthermore, the only exterior change I have planned it to install 15x10 steel wheels with the dog dish (yea I know) hub caps.
Just harvested a DOHC out of a Mark VIII for my Mustang.
Must say I don't think I'd buy a Mark VIII knowing how crammed in there everything is. Whew there's a lot of stuff in there.
But the engine is apart now and at the machinist.
Yeah they're cramped all right.. Outta look pretty good with some room to breath in my '78. If I ever get the frame back... I'm about ready to go get it and just get the torch out and try to straighten the piece myself blacksmith style
I've pulled prob 6-7 mk8 motors and figured out that the first thing you do is take a 4 pound hammer to the plastic wiper cowl makes a lot more room. Especially when at the pull a part Yard
Tim that's a beautiful '59 and great dogs.
I respect older Chevies ('70 back)even though I won't own one. Nice period correct wheels on your car.
I also respect the designers of this stuff so Ford in a Ford etc.
I think the only exception is an oil burner in a Ford as there was no alternative for the masses back then. And diesels kick azz.
If you want a hot rod you should drive a big block or FE that's been built. It kicks it.
I'm no expert on this swap but considering they'll put coyote crate motor in an cobra kit, I would think it should fit the bay of the big Ford truck. But maybe the frames are wider in the car? Are you also thinking of using an MT82 or going with an automatic? That would be pretty slick to see a 6 speed manual in that but hooking up the transfer case might be real fun and I see you truck is an automatic.
