Did you recently change the oil? Mine makes a loud ticking sound at ft of engine and underneath for 2k miles after oil change. I took to Ford and Im told nothing to worry about "yeah right" I talked to a great mech and he informed me that when oil is drained the oil is removed from the timing chain tensioner and it take a good while for it to build pressure enough for the chain to tighten again (as it is done thru oil pressure)
Again mine sounds like a piston or rod knock for 2k miles after that its fine.

To the comment highlighted in bold red: WHISKEY TANGO FOXTROT. These engines do not have a timing chain. It is a gear to gear drive.
Totally my bad. Was basing my comment on miss information. Sorry for the incorrect post. I may have misunderstood his statement. Mine does have loud tick 2 k miles after the oil change, but then clears up
On the other hand I am a 7.3 fan and own 3 of them two Excursions with low miles and F350 with 130k I bought all new. Too bad all not as well built as these.
It's all good. But back to the original topic of the thread, these 6.7L engines do seem to have a very "ticky" sound to them by nature, out of all the ones I hear running. Not at all like the traditional "clacky" sound the older diesel engines. So with that said, I call it normal as well.
Mine also has the tick after getting the oil changed.. Have also heard it having a constant tick tick tick like a stuck lifter or something..I hope these don't turn out to be the diesel version of the 2.9l v6 like my 88 ranger.. 2.9 takes a Lickin' and keeps on tickin' literally...

Oh I know exactly what you're talking about. That's almost the same as the 2.8L V6 engine that was optional on the Ford Pintos and Mustang IIs of the 70s. The lifters in those engines were notorious for being loud.

The engine will STILL tick no matter what mileage you are. It's just a louder right after an engine change. I can still hear mine like at 4k into new oil, when I change it at 5k, then I can really hear it. If you go by like a wall or anything, you can hear it pretty good. Nothing to worry about at all, just a normal noise for the truck that we never heard before, because of how loud the engine was.
I forgot to mention. I had a 2011 that I drove to 60k miles before buying the 2013. I use rot synthetic and change oil every 10-12 k. My 2011 never made the ticking noise my 2013 makes, it was totally quite before and after oil changes.
Ford calls the noise "typewriter noise" Im guessing it sounds like the old ones people used back in the day. Has anyone else heard that term from Ford?
