Conversions?

Ok boys and girls... got my 2000 F250 CrewCab 4x4 flatbed weight and it comes in at 8620lbs with me in it.... I need to convert this thing to a Dually!!!! Looking for ideas or should I try and buy a 2000-2002 F350 crewcab Dually? I hate the idea of getting another truck and trying to figure out what needs fixed and upgraded... I've put a lot of time and money in this one and would like to keep it since I know the engine and trans are solid. I currently have a Dana 50 front with Yukon Locker and 10.5 Rear with Yukon Locker.... So I'm thinking that the selling of those axles will help offset the overall cost of a new Dana 60 with Yukon Locker and Dana 80 with Yukon Locker.

Looking for idea's... any I know it seems like a waste to upgrade a F250 but its a solid truck .... But I am willing to maybe get a F350 from that time frame.

What is your end goal? If it's higher capacity, adding wheels, or springs, or changing axles doesn't change the max legal GVWR one bit and you'd be better off the find a DRW truck. If it's just for peace of mind, then swap whatever is cost effective to swap.

hmmm

This conversion would be to increase the weight capacity of this truck.... even a 2000 F350 crewcab dually is GVWR of 12500.... that would still keep me from hauling a 22k trailer....or even a 16k trailer for that matter..... I can't change the original stats but if I change the axles and brakes springs then this would be a custom truck and I can plate it as such in Indiana. Fords settings were very unrealistic in 2000 for these trucks vs the axles frame and brakes they have. I also know per the specs that the 250 and 350 frames are the same unless you talk about cab over chassis F350 this still applies today.

Sounds like you're aware of the logistics of it. I would get the dually axle and swap it if Indiana will let you register it as such

Changing the factory GVWR on a truck is very difficult. You can make the mods and register it for tax purposes at whatever weight your state will allow, but that does not change the factory weight rating. I don't know how it is done in Indiana, but in PA you have to have a certified state mechanic inspect and sign off on your application. And there aren't many mechanics around that are willing to put their neck on the line for you.

Talking to Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance since I own my truck title and all they said if I mod it they would still cover me.... Indiana is very lax on plating vehicles..... I understand the concerns but I don't plan on hauling much outside of Indiana..... if I change my axles brakes and springs I don't see how this is a unsafe project.... its not like I'm trying to dually a F150 frame....LMAO

It isn't so much a safety issue as it is a legal one. Just make sure you do your homework. Laws around weight limits are often convoluted and confusing. A mis-cue can cost you dearly.

Find a wrecked or blown up F450 or 550. Grab the bed, axles, springs, and brakes. Done.
