1979 F250 vs F350 4x4
I'm looking to get a 4x4 truck to haul equipment and junk around my property I just bought and wonder what the difference is suspension and frame wise between a 79 F250 4x4 and F350. I've seen a number of F250s but not many F350s. I plan on hauling smallish tractors (no larger than D4) and vehicles but just want to make sure the only difference is the springs and nothing too major since I will probably be replacing the springs some time soon with a 4 inch lift. Thanks.

the F350 has heavier duty springs, axles, a dana 60 front and dana 70 rear, as opposed to a D44HD or D60 front and D60 rear on the F250, (higher gvwr on an F350) other than that not much is different but an 250 will do the job just fine. Remember the gearing on the rear end is a major factor.

some f250's have a dana 60 front but most have a dana 44 with 8 lug hubs and bigger brakes. As far as the rears go the only f350's that came with dana 70's are dually trucks but you can just put single wheels on them. The springs may or may not be any heavier on f350's vs f250's if it is a dually it will have a lot more spring under the rear and I have some of those. Now about the engine and gears the 4x4 only came with 351m's but alot of people have swaped in 460's because the 351m is under powerd especially to haul with. I have done this swap a couple of times and it can be expensive so try to find one with a 460 already they it will save you alot. the gears were 3:55 and 4:11 you want the 4:11 especially if you are getting a 351m.

I'm in Mountain Ranch and unfortunately the F350 I was looking at has already sold. I would prefer the 350 over the 250, but finding the 4X4 version is rather hard up here w/o it being beat to snot.

I have a 77 f150 and upgraded to 60 frt and 70 rear. The problem I ran into was my tie rods were bigger on my half ton compared to newer one ton stuff. 1990 dana 60 has smaller joints. It was a part of the plan I didn't figure into this build I did and learned the hard way. Just thought I'd mention this. The tapered end is smaller on dana 60 compared to dana 44 front. Everything I did was a step down to the newer stuff compared to the old, funny. I've since upgraded everything to overkill and good to go.
