Hey Guys.

I wanted to resurface this thread that I started a long time ago.
I'm still running the turbonetics and really want to upgrade.

It's hard for me to decide between getting a 38r or converting to t4 since I've never been in a truck that has similar mods as me with the 38r.

Hard to gamble on whether or not it'll be THAT much better than what I have and if it'll be worth the doe. A drop in is more in my price range but I don't want to be disappointed if its not a good amount better than what I have. In that case, I'd just wait and save up for a full T4 setup.

Any more input on that?

Also, there's a guy on craigslist here locally selling what he is calling a GARRETT T4' WITH A 50MM WHEEL. It's listed for $600.

Says it only has 600 to 800 miles on it. Not sure if I believe that part.

Here's the link: https://honolulu.craigslist.org/oah/pts/6123379291.html

Let me know what you think. I'll post the addn pics he just sent me. I asked for more close ups of the wheel so I can see if there is any wear on the fins.

Let me know what you think.

Thanks,

Bryce

With those power numbers why switch? Anyway, save for the T4 set up. Brad on here just sold his 38R for a T4 set up and really loves the way it handles his sticks. I believe he has 200/80. You have over 2 to 1 torq/HP, that is really good if you dyno'd it.

I think the 38R is old news at this point. DieselSite has their REBUILDABLE ball bearing "Wicked Turbo". It is cheaper then a 38R, already has a WW2 and TurboMaster wastegate controller, AND its bigger then the 38R (66/88 compressor vs 66/94). I THINK the exhaust wheel is bigger also, but I'm not 100% sure on that.

There is also the KC38R from CNC Fabrication
CNC Fabrication LLC, Diesel Performance, KC TURBOS L99-03 KC38R

I was not aware of the wicked turbo, but my first impression was that the air inlet is significantly smaller than the 38r or the kc38r.

Because I'm so laggy on the bottom end. When I roll on slower and stay in the mid to high end it screams. But sometimes if I'm low rpms and boost then stomp on it, the sticks just pump so much that the turbo cant catch up.

Hmmm..

That KC38R is sparking my interest. Affordable drop in and supposedly a bit better than the GTP38R. Claims to be able to handle some pretty hefty injectors so that makes me feel like it'd have great performance on my 160/100s.

It's offered in both the stock 3" intake and the 4" ported depending on what they're switching from. Don't want someone to have to buy a new intake back to stock if they don't have it anymore.

If I recall, we don't push the 4" unless they're coming from one already because there's like no measurable improvement from it.
I'm sure I'll start a ****storm with this post but I'm just reporting what we found in testing. Whatever design we're doing with the wheel in this model turbo makes the style of the cover irrelevant.

Ironically, I also know we're out of them (the 4")... had a few people changing from the 38R to ours who didn't have their stock 3" anymore.

The question is, exactly how did you test? What were the parameters of the test? What did you test? If you only tested the turbo, with it just open to atmosphere, then I don't doubt that there was very little, or no difference, in airflow between the 3" and 4" inlet. Its so short, that there wouldn't be much influence on airflow (other then possible turbulence at the lip?) HOWEVER, I think that the difference will show up in the size of the inlet ducting.
If you were to test 2 100% identical turbos, with FULL intake duct work/air cleaner, etc, exactly as would be in place on a truck, then I am confident that there would be an improvement of some sort with a 4" inlet, attached to a 4" hose, with a free breathing air cleaner ( such as an S&B) VS the same turbo, with a 3" inlet size, 3" duct ("elbow"), attached to the same air cleaner setup.
I would expect to see a quicker spool, if nothing else. I mean think about it... Regardless of how big your mouth is, its always easier to suck through a bigger straw.
