Bought my 2006 with 115,000 on it. Thoroughly flushed cooling system upon purchase and installed coolant filter and new thermostat also. 122,000 today, changed filter, cut open old one. Very minimal sediment in bottom of filter housing. Looks to be sand size rust colored debris. Much, much less than a spoonful. Could fit all of it on top of my thumb nail. Nothing visible in pleats at all. Just thought I'd report findings.
I changed my filter at 500 mi and had about the same. But this is after a flush and 2 oil coolers (one was dorman). My 1st cooler was plugged and I flushed before I removed it. Cat ec1 now and about 8-10 deltas with the oem cooler.
I have an '07 -- one of the blocks that were supposed to be "double washed" to get casting sand out; anyway.... I had the coolant flush done for me, so read into that what you will.
While installing my coolant filter I ended up draining coolant out of the block drain valves (now installed). Sand was in the fluid
The XDP filter system is so cheap and so easy to install, I'd put it up there with the BlueSpring upgrade as for a "why not"?! thing to do...
My $.02 -- and yes I will post up what I find in the first filter...
I've been running a Sinister Diesel coolant filter system now for over two years. The first filter I removed and cut open had what looked like gunpowder, about a tablespoon full in the bottom of the canister. That was after only 100 miles. I swapped out two more filters, each at 300 mile intervals then the last two annually. I feel the price of the filter alone was peace of mind knowing some of that casting crap was being delivered and extracted away.

Was it magnetic? Sounds more like front case erosion than "casting sand".
I believe most are seeing normal calcium and lime deposits in the coolant filters and not "sand"
Cut open a plugged oil cooler and see something similar to this?
