Coolant filter update

Hi all,

I installed a coolant filter kit from dieselsite.com about a month ago. I put on about 600 miles on the first filter (after my egr cooler delete from FCDP and coolant flush/coolant change), removed it and let it dry.

Initially I had alot of gunk and junk on the surface of the 1st filter upon removal.

I was thinking I would certainly have a filter full of "stuff" or casting sand. I cut the top off and proceeded to dissect the filter. The filter was clean as clean could be.

I was kinda disappointed (not for the install, but not finding sand) that it was so clean. I am happy I installed the filter but sad I didn't find casting sand in it.

Maybe I got lucky and my motor came from IH clean and free of casting sand....What do you guys think?

Thanks
Joe

I ordered one also. It should be here Wednesday. If you've seen my other post about my coolant loss you know my truck is at the dealer to be diagnosed. As soon as I get it back I'll install the filter. If my EGR cooler is bad this will be the second replacement. If its not bad, then maybe the filter will save me the cost of an EGR cooler and oil cooler in the future.

Joe-

My previous truck was an 03 6.0, and when I installed the coolant filter on it I found the same clean coolant that you found on your truck. However, on my new 06, my first coolant filter plugged up in 300 miles and looked like this:

I bought both trucks with about 50k miles on them, and installed the coolant filter on both trucks shortly thereafter. I don't know why the 03 coolant was clean as a whistle while the 06 coolant was grungy, but there was definitely a difference.

You probably got most of the junk out when you flushed it.

On the 03, I did replace the lower radiator hose once. So it did have some newer coolant in the system, but I never did a thorough flushing.

This past weekend on the 06, I got the coolant to operating temp, opened the lower radiator hose and dumped, reconnected the hose and filled with 3 - 3.5 gallons of distilled water. I did this procedure 5 or 6 times, then filled with 3.5 gallons of new Motorcraft Gold after the last dump. I'd call that a decent flush, not great but decent. Hopefully the next coolant filter will last a long time.

I have seen the same trend, though mine has never been as bad as some have shown (like above). My first has some sand and other 'stuff'. My second change had a little but signifficantly less than the first. I have left my third one in for a full oil change cycle and will be changing it shortly. If it looks even better, I will like drop to changing the coolant filter every other oil change. My feeling is that after all the casting stuff is out, it is just an insurance item and should not need near to replacement schedule as it does in the beginning.

I don't think changing it more than once a year would be necessary after the first few filters clean all the gunk out. Heck, I'm not sure I'd even change it that often if the flow into the degas bottle doesn't slow down.

I read elsewhere that Ford adds stop-leaks to the coolant when they are new. I don't know how much truth there is to that, but it could explain the massive amount of goop I filtered out if the coolant was all original.

I changed my coolant filter last night. It was the first time I changed it and it had been on about 6 months. I installed it at the same time I installed a new waterpump. I use a Napa Gold 4070 filter. I poured it out in a bucket and there was definitely sand and grit in there!

It looked like after 6 months the rubber gasket had deteriorated to the point it was leaking.

Just changed out my second filter with several thousand miles on it. There was none of the thick goop that my first filter had (see my pictures posted previously in this thread). However, there was a thin layer of some slimy substance on the paper that must have been restricting flow.

I have a feeling that this filter, filter number 3, will flow coolant for quite a long time. However, just in case, I just snagged a filter off ebay that just happened to come with everything (except for hose and hose clamps) needed to build another coolant filter system.

Does anyone want to buy a 25771500SS filter base, brass shutoff valves, and a couple of pvc tees for a good price?
