I have a 75 f250, 2x4, that had a 360 in it. Recently I rebuilt everything in the steering, column, linkage, bushings, and new Redhead box. But still it remained a bit difficult to steer. Poking around I found that the drivers side frame was moving where the cross member joins the frame, and the spring perch.
The rivets are loose and the holes have enlarged over time. Can I simply remove them and drill larger amd insert grade eight bolts?
I pretty much have removed all my cross members,at the moment front rear leaf hangers,to blast and paint, grade 8,lock washers and lock tight.I have the 78.79 steering box modified to fit HB ,plates on each side, spacers and grade 8 bolts and nuts and washers.
I would not think that "the drivers side frame moving where the cross member joins the frame, and the spring perch", would make it difficult to steer.
Yes remove the rivets and replace with larger grade 8 bolts, I hope it helps, but I would bet it does not take care of the steering problem.
Ck for maybe a froze up bearing in the steering column and or a bad steering shaft u joint. How are you front axle u joints? They can cause some stiff steering issues.
I guess I should clarify a few things. First, thanks for chiming in guys. I appreciate the help. The truck is 2x4, so no front axle. Also, everything has been rebuilt that concerns steering: new king pins (3 years ago), all the bushings replaced, column freshly rebuilt, new coupler, new RedHead box, new Moog tie rods.
And still there is just enough free play in the wheel to make it a small challenge on the freeway. Imagine a clock, and I have free play from three minutes before the hour to three minutes after the hour, or close to it.
While checking everything I noticed how the frame flexes when the steering is turned. Three years back I welded up all the cracks around the box. I'm wondering if the cross member under the engine adds stability to that side of the frame, and because mine is loose it allows the box and frame there to tweak. That has to be the problem, but I will continue checking.
Oh, I also wanted to ask: When I replaced the tie rods I ended up with a left over part. It looks like a large washer with a 90* lip around the perimeter. The inside has rubber in it. Does that part mount between the drag link and center link? It doesn't show up on the diagrams I have.
