Gas Overflow

My gas tank keeps overflowing and leaking out through the cap and down the side of my truck. I just had my fuel tank filled (here in Oregon you can't pump your own gas) and noticed the attendant stood by my truck pumping the whole time instead of using the clip and walking away (like they usually do) so I'm thinking he filled it right to the top (I didn't notice at the time) This was last night and when I got to my truck this morning, gas was leaking out the cap, down the side of my truck and dripping into the gutter. I syphoned out what I could using a small clear fuel line from a motorcycle and got it down past the rim. I drove down the road aways, did an errand, came home and parked. I just walked out to the truck after a couple of hours and it's doing it again. I syphoned out some gas again and was a little more aggressive this time. It is a hotter than normal day, is there expansion going on? Has anyone out there experienced this?

BTW my truck is a '64 F100 with the tank behind the seat. The road I park on is pretty flat but might lean a pinch towards the drivers side. Any feedback would be appreciated!

Welcome to the club.

Gas expands with heat and the gas caps are vented (have to be or pressure would cause the tank to bulge.

Thanks for sharing that. Very interesting! Well, looks like I should drive across town and drop the fuel level. My truck wreaks of gas now and I can't get that taste out of my mouth.

Two suggestions:
1) Don't go to that gas station again.
2) Buy a siphoning pump.

This is an issue that has been going on since the 40s & 50s. I suggest never filling the tank unless you can drive 3-5 gallons out. Park the truck drivers side high. You can do this in a parking lot by driving the drivers side rear wheel up on the curb.

Sorry that you folks out there aren't smart enough to fill your own tanks.

Keep voting the way that you have.

I have made it a habit to only fill to 3/4. Even then, after a fillup the first time I get out I undo the cap to release the pressure.

Cured this problem on my 64 with a vented gas cap. Of corse not before it leaked out over night and pealed the new paint up on my cab

It's probably a good habit to never go for a second "click" when filling any fuel tank. But the old ford in-cab tanks are narrow and five or six feet long. Classic way is filling up in cooler temps and then parking at an angle, direct sunlight and afternoon does the rest. A completely full tank stores better if parked for a long time ,but leaves only a filler neck for expansion be careful that wide swings don't cause leaks in enclosed spaces. Just a gallon or so shy is enough to prevent this, so long as roughly level.
