Question Help in Southern Ohio with Turbo

Here is the rundown of the truck one owner from texas not a lot of idle time and pedals look good for the year and the mileage so mostly highway driving bought the truck on a gamble. 2006 F-350 Single wheel supercab long bed 154k miles, bought the truck at dealer cost due to them being scared of it for white smoking, again white only no haze no blue, straight white smoke. Don't get on me b/c I am new to ford's always have had cummins, but was so impressed with 6.0 power i told myself to take the risk. So 4weeks ago EGR Delete kit figure first step for white smoke from what all I had been researching. Problem definitely not solved, talked to a few local mechanics that work on these motors, oh they say you need to do the head studs on it. Everyone of them did without even looking at the truck, me being naive believed it after reading all of the stories about the problem with stretched bolts. So studded which was money out of my pocket since Decided to let someone else do it $2300. Good to go he said within five miles smoking again, crap so i pulled back in and then he was like well it could be leftover in your exhaust run it a little. So 30 mile trip home 10 miles in the truck can barely hold it's nose up in overedrive bucking and stuttering have to turn tow/haul on so it would keep the rpms up. So talk to a few old friends who new another guy close to me took it to him #1 cylinder dead, #8 way overfueling, he opens it up busted rocker arm he said mine is the 3rd one he has ever seen do this. So I pick it up he said the smoke is almost gone but it had so much fuel in the motor and exhaust it may take a few days to clear up. So no big deal drives great runs like a scalded dog, take my boy to a b/day party go to leave no start crank, crank, crank, gave it a shot of ether like no problem and hasn't happened since. So I figure I am done paying others to do the work I can do even though I have only been into gas motors and have always has someone do diesels for me. So i get an autoeng*nuity scanner. While waiting for it to come in the smoke went from whit puffs to now rolling out and has a blue haze at instant get on let off, but if you stay in you would never see it cause it turns to white so quick. Well scanner gets here do buzz test good, do ficm check great, do ipr great pressures, do power balance expecting to see #1 or 8 acting up nope. So since I saw blue i say well time to pull turbo and check. Turbo looks as if the exhaust side has a coal bed around the sides and oil is rolling out of it. This was yesterday, now today rebuild turbo? or replace turbo? Is the magic question but this has been a month and a half saga wrapped up to basically the problem all along for the smoke was turbo.

I have never rebuilt a turbo let alone cleaned one, I am mechanically inclined but just don't mess with diesels because they are too touchy compared to gas in my opinion, I started on gas learned all about gas so that is where I am comfortable. From checking no back and forth play no side to side play it feels good and solid, just seems like a bad oil seal. But is it one of the small ones on the shaft or the big o-ring typically? I have it out sitting on my bench I am just wondering if there is a good person with these that are reasonable on price or willing to help me and I will pay for your time. I just want this up on the road owned for 45 days driven 7 days total. Frustrated. message me or email me at warfaremma@yahoo.com or sevenfourzero464thirtyoneeighty

Tough deal. I would just say that 2300 is a SMOKIN deal on studs. If the job is to your satisfaction,,, you got the hookup. I just sent a turbo to a company in Miami,, mike turbo. I wish I could state the quality,, but it's still on the shelf. They took two turbos and made one. It was a sheared center shaft. I wish I could vouch for them,, but I can't yet.

All this work on the truck no body checked out the turbo? Is there oil dripping from the tail pipe??? $2300 is ridiculous to give somebody to do studs. Sorry I'm just so proud to say I did my head job for around $1000. In my barn without pulling the cab. I think a rebuilt oem turbo is like $1200 tho. I had to replace my center housing rotating assembly of my turbo for that much come to find out I can get a whole rebuilt turbo for around that much.

For $1300 you could have had a powermax.

Nope no one checked it I even paid the guy and extra $60 to clean the turbo so it should have been caught, but I should have checked sooner than last week. I was just going through a list of possible causes know I have finally found it. I am just going to rebuild it when the kit comes in this week.

Lets run this down

Studs. $410
Hg's. $300
Rocker box gaskets. $45
Push tubes. $80
Turbo install kit. $12
Ccv oring. $5
Oil filter stand pipe oring. $7
Oil cooler kit(if needed). $300
Coolant. $100
Oil change. $100
Injector orings. $80
Glow plugs. $90
Glow plug wiring. $110
Exhaust mani gaskets. $20
Exhaust mani bolts n spacers. $35
Ac accumulator n orifice tube. $30
Machine shop. $100

That is all I can think of right now. But 2300 IS NOT ridiculous no matter how you explain it. To do a quality job,, we are at $2000 labor only. I've seen too many hack jobs come in after a "budget" repair was done. Oh,, here's one

Not trying to say anything about your job tho ridediesel. Most people come on here and ask about the pricing they should expect to pay someone. Doing it yourself cannot be compared to a shop setting. Apples to oranges.

No you're right. That was a mess of a job in that video. I did have to get a bunch of o rings and all new push rods so I was around $1200. So I guess 2300 isn't bad. I've heard of so many hg jobs being over 5000. I just want to encourage people to learn about their trucks and do as much as they can. And I hate hearing people spend so much and never really know what the shop actually did.

Status update: Turbo out of truck, it had been leaking bad the metal ring seal was basically shot. So 2 hours for removal 30 minutes splitting the turbo down. Tomorrow another 30 minutes cleaning and polishing everything, wed kit will be in to put back together form RiffRaff. Should be able to have truck back together by Friday. This was a lot easier and not as complicated as I thought it would be. It was harder removing, and the install is going to be a pain, than it was to do the turbo itself. Thanks again for all the info guys.
