Going to onepiece driveshaft

Well may be going to a one piece driveshaft in my 05 cc short bed. Took my rear driveshaft out to see if my high speed vibration went away and it did. I was getting a shudder or vibration around 55- 65 mph. I took my shaft to a custom shaft guy locally. He said if my old shaft didn't turn true he said he could make a one piece shaft like I wanted. Maximum tube length for a one piece is 72". My flange to flange measurement is 74" so I will be well under the 72" tube length by the time you figure the yokes and slip yoke. Otherwise just gonna have old one balanced if it is good and straight. I have seen many other people have had this issue in the past so I figured I would post my ventures as well. By the way truck is completely stock no lift. I bought this truck used in Feb. so now I am going through the process of fixing the items the PO most likely didn't want to fix. Oh well that's the way it goes.

Have you done this yet? I'd be curious to see if it fixes the problem. I just bought a 2005 F350 and experienced the same problem on the drive home yesterday. I didn't realize SuperDuties were prone to this problem, the truck drives quite nicely up to 50 or so. But on the interstate, at speeds 55 and up, the shudder occurs. But it doesn't happen all the time.

Thanks,

Phil

first why is the shaft out of play? is it a 15 dollar ujoint bad or are the slip splines worn from a previous owner beating the truck to death? I have a ext cab short bed and i have that STUPID double carbon joint on my rear shaft anything at and above 63mph i have a slight vibration. Took it too a Spicer certified driveshaft shop almost an hour away from me, they said my new Napa ujoints were loose in the caps and i needed all new yokes welded in and a balance afterwards. well 347 dollars later and a print out that my shaft is true up to 80mph i still have that vibration...... but when i remove the rear shaft and drive down the highway with only the front driveshaft my truck is smooth as glass! Just saying make sure its not a cheap fix like a ujoint or the center rubber driveshaft holder thats only like a 40 dollar fix. I spent alot of money for nothing and i still have an issue and the shop wont do anything but double check their shaft.....

I ended up staying with the factory 2 piece. I had a one piece made but the guy who made locally did a crappy job and it didn't work. So lesson learned there. Anyhow I had the rear portion of factory 2 piece retubed all new joints and new hanger bearing. Then it was balanced all together and they put new nylon on the splines of slip yoke. This took 98% of vibration away. It has a very slight vibe around 50-55 but then is smooth the rest of the way out to 90mph. That's as fast as I've had it. The shop I had finish the work does not have a high speed balancer. They spin it to 1000rpm and there machine calculates how much weight to add. I think it's called a Hines balancer? Anyways that was my endeavor with vibe issue. Very happy with the way the truck drives now.

Most don't know that you're supposed to pull that shaft apart and grease those splines.... Don't blame the truck for lack of knowledge. A lot of guys will drill and tap putting a grease zerk in there so they don't have to take it apart.
