Four Wheel Drive

I have a 1965 Ford F-100 stepside, it has the straight six with 3 on the tree, it had a back yard restoration when in I was about 8 or 9, I am currently 32. The truck has been in the family for as long as I can remember, and need a total restoration. I am curious for any advice that can be given the best route to turn this 2wd into a 4wd. I am debating on that or just changing the engine out to something with a tremendous amount of HP. I figured if I went the 4wd route I would basically have to find the frame and running gear from a bronco or something and just fit the body to that frame. any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance Clay McLendon

the easiest way is to put a newer chassis under it, I run a 65 shortbed over a 79 F-150 short chassis. It was almost a direct bolt on, just had to jack the body up 1 inch to clear the rear frame, and had to do a little bit of modification to the last few inches of the frame.

Did you relocate the bed holes in the frame closer to the cab so you could fill the gap between the cab and bed? Then the extra would be at the rear of the frame instead of leaving a 2" gap in the middle

1966 F100 4WD has coil spring front suspension, uses the same cab as 1965/66 F100/250 2WD and the same Styleside beds as 1964/66 F100/250 2WD.

1965 F100/250 4WD & 1966 F250 4WD use the older cab with a cab step, "wrong" 1957/60 Styleside beds.

The wheelbases are shorter than were used on the 1965/66 F100/250 2WD's & 1966 F100 4WD's. Shorter than 1967/72 and 1973/79.

First and foremost, Welcome to FTE, looking forward to your input and post pic's if and when you can.

Agree, would not attempt to install 4x4 power train in a 2wd chassis, totally different and likely require major refab. I agree with comments about placing the body on the 4x4 chassis. I may look for a donor were the dimensions, suspension and steering configuration would make for the best fit. Perhaps 64-72 chassis; although, later model 4by may offer up to date gearing options and parts more accessible, perhaps more knowledgeable member could advise?? Again, welcome to FTE.
